Five Poems

by Phoebe Tsang

MOON FISH COFFIN

a slice of moon dangles
like fishing lure

bigger each night
closer to horizon

by late afternoon
the hungry ghosts of

everything you dreamed
outnumber the living

MICE BIRDS COFFIN

behind
the fridge
a nest

of blind
babies
hungry
hairless

first prayer
then poison

a chorus
rousing
trebled
croaks

each
morning
another
dead mouse

CHILD SHIP ANCHOR

sa-

song
as truth

drunk
like silk

I walk
alone

ta-

along
the path
where

lost things
are found

the meeting
place of
our bodies

na-

the fruit
you reap

weeping

a traveller
returns

ma-

rain kisses
your window

children's voices
waiting for snow

in the future
you'll remember

living the rest of
your life with me

Notes:

Sa Ta Na Ma = Truth, essence, identity. Sa Ta Na Ma is a mantra for meditation in the Kundalini yoga practice.

Sa = birth, infinity
Ta = life, creation
Na = death, transformation
Ma = rebirth, resurrection

KING OF CUPS

I hold a candle
to your cup

Is that deep blue
void or full

Careful don't spill
one drop

can light the way
for days

NINE

the circle
is complete

the brush
lingers before
lift
     off

a tail
tapering
             feline

how many lives
has it been

one foot
on the path

one foot
in the earth
