Reading Basho On The 2 Train

by Ariel Francisco

Sequence of darkness
and then we emerge over
lightfields of the Bronx.

Faces of strangers
around me — silent, fallen
leaves swept on the train.

Doors slide open at
Freeman Station, iced ground,
a haiku spoken:

As you leave the train,
please watch the gap between the
train and the platform.
