Couplets from Shaoyang

by Justin Hill

I. Written on the columns of Shuifu Theatre, where opera once played

Delicate hands pick the tune,
one the autumn river, one the moon.

Strings still, the music lingers —
a river breeze, drifting clouds.

II. At Shuangqing Pavilion, seeing the distant forest stretching through the hills

Clouds carry the bell’s call,
drifting through the forest

Moon-set stretches the pagoda’s shadow
out, across the river.
