Ginger Flower Woman

by Elbert S.P. Lee

Slaughtered chickens hung by their nostrils, already skinned...
raw fish lay with stretched-out bellies...
I and these desolate beings, we exchanged glances,
each contemplated the other’s karma.

In this tamed entanglement
of life and death, of need and sacrifice,
a woman passed by...
she bought a stem of ginger flower,
to decorate her humble steel and concrete home.
