An Ode to the Tree Roots: Part III

by Wong Leung Wo, translated from the Chinese by Jessica Siu-yin Yeung

In the first place, the desire to bloom hid in the seed
Becoming the source of strength for itself to struggle and to grow taller, to consider endlessly
Bursting into a luminous point of fixation
At this moment, it resembles a blaze flashing suddenly
And becomes for bees and butterflies the centre of revolving dance
The nocturnal barbarians surround the lustre of the god statue
And sing the rousing hymns with a loud voice
There was once I was like the others
Facing the petals of the beautiful image, gazing, longing
Waiting for it to bear the sweet fruits of the earthly world
Luxuriant and fleshy fruits suspending in the air, as if the god of redemption might descend at anytime Among us
Did we become worshipers for once
Gazing reverently, at those heroes and gods who enjoy the gaze?
At this moment, my aching neck has grown weary to lift my head
It stoops towards the real land
Eventually piercing through the superficial sight and see you all
Buried tranquilly, heaps of anonymity and humbleness
As if you have remained silent underneath since genesis
You have never ever ceased to excavate and open up for the peaceful land
Strengthening and steadying the axis of the universe without words
One day, a sacred tree shall rise from the mortal world
Only if I can transform into rainwater
Melt into the soil and come to your roots.
